Alcoholics Anonymous holds an “International Convention” every 5 years in a major North American City.   It is one of the largest membership conventions in the world with recent registration figures reaching between 50,000 and 60,000 attendees.  In 1955, Saint Louis hosted the second International Convention, the back drop for the Conference Approved AA Book, “AA Comes of Age”, about how AA went through its stages of infancy, development and in Bill W’s estimation, achieving maturity.   The most important part of the 1955 event was the ratification of the Conference Plan, the system by which AA as a whole is run by the collective conscience of its groups.

Entree

St. Louis is working to become the host of the International Convention for the year 2030 and has become a finalist.    The two finalist cities recieve a visit from the site selection committee.  Each finalist city is judged on the following criteria:

  • Facilities
  • Hotel Package
  • Local Transportation
  • Travel Access
  • General Cost Climate
  • City Attractions
  • City Convention Experience
  • Walkability and Gathering Places
  • Regional Rotation of Site
  • Financial Ramifications
  • Other

In our estimation, “other” can mean just about everything.   The only thing we can add, which is one of the factors, is confidence in the local AA community to provide enough volunteers to welcome all of Alcoholics Anonymous to the community.   Volunteers are needed at airports, train stations, hotels, the convention center….. anywhere members will see them as they filter into town.   The only way we can give the site selection committee confidence is by gathering together to give them a greeting when THEY visit St. Louis.

Dessert

Every one of us LOVES a GOOD PARTY!   So that’s what we’ll do.   On the arrival date of the Site Selection Commitee, St. Louis local AA’s are coming together to give them a welcome they’ll remember.   There will be food, fun, and fellowship.   Live music, events for the family and TONS and TONS of ENTHUSIASM!   Be There at the Old Post Office Plaza, Downtown St. Louis ;   July 11th at 7pm.
